“I don’t want anything to happen to my house. It’s all I have.”

Rebecca has been living in her home since 1994. When her family moved in, it needed repairs, but they didn’t have the resources to fix everything. She was just happy to have a place to call home.

Rebecca’s husband has passed away in 2013 and since then she has struggled even more with finances. She’s taking care of her 93-year-old cousin who has Alzheimer’s and that’s hard to do when her home is not safe. The porch roof leaks from all sides rotting the wood. The kitchen floor is sinking in and Rebecca is afraid to walk on it. The house has very old baseboard heating and only window air conditioning units. Rebecca has trouble breathing and often gets nosebleeds because the air quality in the house is so bad.

When Hurricane Florence ripped through Wilmington in 2018 a neighbor’s tree fell on her roof, crashing into her bathroom causing severe damage. Another tree leans precariously on her property putting her roof at risk again during storms.

Because of WARM NC donors and volunteers, Rebecca’s home will be safe. The porch roof will be repaired. The kitchen floors will no longer be sinking in. A new HVAC system will make the air easier to breathe. And that dangerous tree will be removed so it no longer poses a threat.
