Every step felt unsteady

For Henrietta, home is more than just a house—it’s where she and her late husband built their life together. She has lived in her Duplin County home for over 30 years, determined to stay even after his passing. But maintaining it on her own became difficult.

At 77, Henrietta faces the daily challenges of COPD, asthma, and severe rheumatoid arthritis. Simple tasks became harder, and even her own bathroom felt like a struggle. Getting in and out of the tub took careful effort, and each step required caution. What should have been a place of comfort had turned into another source of worry.

Her carpet had become a tripping hazard, and her back porch—once her favorite spot—was too unstable to use. When the Weatherization Assistance Program referred her to WARM NC, she applied, unsure of what to expect. The call confirming she had been approved brought a sense of relief.

Staff, volunteers, and contractors came together to transform Henrietta’s home into a safer space where she could move freely without fear. The back porch was repaired, welcoming her back to the fresh air she had missed. Inside, the old carpet was replaced with sturdy flooring, making every step feel more secure. In her bathroom, WARM installed an ADA-compliant toilet and grab bars, giving her back a sense of independence and ease.

Now, Henrietta moves through her home

with confidence, no longer watching every step in fear of falling.

She can sit on her porch again, enjoying the simple pleasure of fresh air and conversation with neighbors. With these essential repairs complete, her home is once again a place of comfort, allowing her to age in place, surrounded by the memories that mean so much to her.
