When Michael first reached out to WARM NC, he wasn’t looking for a complete transformation. He simply wanted to make his home safe again.
As a disabled Army veteran living in Jacksonville, Michael had spent years doing what many homeowners do, taking care of repairs himself whenever he could and putting off the ones that had to wait. But over time, those projects became bigger than one person could manage. Living on a fixed income while supporting his son meant that every new repair required another difficult decision.
The home’s side deck had deteriorated to the point that it was no longer safe to use. Portions of the flooring remained unfinished, creating tripping hazards throughout the house, while damaged siding left the home exposed to the weather. An aging HVAC system and mold concerns around the chimney affected the air quality inside, leaving Michael and his son relying on fans and window air conditioning units and dealing with frequent respiratory illnesses.
Like many homeowners WARM NC serves, Michael wasn’t asking for cosmetic upgrades. He wanted a home that allowed him to live safely and comfortably, without worrying about whether another repair would become an emergency.
Through funding provided by Essential Single-Family Rehabilitation (ESFR), WARM NC was able to complete repairs that addressed both the immediate concerns and the long-term health of the home. The deteriorated deck was replaced with a safe, sturdy entrance, new siding and windows helped protect the home from future weather damage, and the kitchen, bathrooms, and flooring were repaired to make everyday life safer and more functional. Energy-efficient upgrades, improved ventilation, and new smoke and carbon monoxide detectors also created a healthier living environment for Michael and his son.
For Michael, the impact of those repairs extends far beyond the materials that were installed. The work means being able to move through his home more safely, breathe easier, and spend less time worrying about problems that had been building for years. It also means knowing the home he and his son depend on is better prepared for whatever comes next.
